The quake itself hit about 160 miles north of the Andaman Islands at 1:55 a.m. local time. It was initially reported as a 7.7 quake by the United States Geological Survey, but then soon downgraded to a 7.6. The quakes initially caused tsunami warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, however those alerts have been canceled after potential tsunamis were not longer seen as a threat.

Just over 10 minutes later, a 6.6 earthquake struck near Japan. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning following this quake, but estimates that waves resulting from this shock would only be two feet high by the time they reach the coast.
