Volunteer Spotlight: LA's Best's Michaela Pereira

Causecast works with over 50 of our nation’s most active and innovative nonprofits, and we thought it was about time that we started highlighting some of the great work their volunteers are doing.

Throughout the month of August, we’re putting the spotlight on some of our organizations’ most enthusiastic volunteers, continuing today with KTLA reporter and LA’s BEST Friends Board Chair Michaela Pereira.

LA’s BEST works to provide safe and supervised after-school education for elementary school children in Los Angeles. We had the privilege of getting to speak with Michaela a few weeks ago outside KTLA studios in Hollywood.

How did you originally get involved in volunteering for LAs BEST?

Soon after I moved to L.A. in 2004, I was invited to MC the LA’s BEST annual brunch. To be better prepared for the event, I decided to find out more about the organization and arranged to take a tour of one of the school sites. Well, suffice it to say, I was hooked. In fact, I think I signed up right then and there as a volunteer and not long after was invited to sit on the board of LA’s BEST Friends, the young philanthropist group that does a lot of fundraising and awareness building for the organization as well as volunteering with the kids. The work LA’s BEST does with children of the greatest need and fewest resources resonated profoundly with me.

What’s been your most memorable moment?

As a sign of just how tremendous and effective this organization is, it’s nearly impossible to pick out my most memorable time with LA’s BEST. Whether it’s watching the proud faces of kids who have just performed in front of a gymnasium full of people in our annual Drill Team competition, or speaking with a parent who has seen their child transform because of the enrichment LA’s BEST provides, there is almost a most memorable moment each and every time I set foot on a site or visit with some of our kids. See, this is what so many people don’t realize; if you just stop and spend time with these children, you will see how much light, charisma, and ability they hold… not just potentially but right now. It’s a beautiful thing to behold. Like I say, I’m hooked.

How has your life changed through public service?

I was fortunate enough to be raised by parents who believe very strongly in community service: Dad was a civil servant, starting his career as a social worker, while mom had an equally rewarding 35 years teaching in public schools. We were raised to understand the importance of helping a neighbor, a stranger, a child…anyone in need. What’s interesting is that they rarely spoke of this importance, rather it was their tireless actions and efforts that thankfully rubbed off.

I believe fiercely that public service and commitment to community are the pilars of a healthy and robust society.
