Michael Vick to Eagles. How Will Animal Activists React?

I’m writing this story not just as a Causecast editor, but as a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan. Earlier in the day, when Vick was rumored to be headed to Buffalo, I was ready to let go of the story. But now that Michael Vick is traveling to Philly, I wonder if this will help or hurt the franchise, what it will mean for current QB Donovan McNabb, and what sort of effect this will have on the animal rights movement.

My three major thoughts (and I’ll keep this cause-centric, lest my superiors trade me to ESPN):

1) Vick served his time in prison and animal rights organizations such as PETA and The Humane Society have been quick to work with Mike Vick as part of a publicity campaign. Based on the length of his criminal sentence and his new work as a member of the animal rights community, there’s not much of a gripe with his returning to play in the NFL.

2) The Eagles are betting that they can get through the PR mess and be a more effective team with Vick, even though he can’t play until almost halfway through the season. I’m thinking much more about Donovan McNabb, who’s been the best quarterback in Eagles history, and one of my favorite players of the last decade.

3) Despite all the controversy, all the articles still being written, dogfighting is no more of an issue than it was the day before the Vick story first broke. There are still illegal dogfighting rings in America, but nearly every article you’ll read this week is about how Vick regrets being involved in dogfighting, not on the fight to crack down on the cruel and inhumane practice.

One more question to ask. Even though he won’t be available until Week 7, do I dare draft Vick for my fantasy team?

No, I don’t have a girlfriend. Why do you ask?
