This Labor Day, spend your holiday doing some good for school children across America. Slow Food USA’s Time for Lunch Campaign has declared September 7th, 2009 the National Day of Action to get REAL FOOD in Schools. The federal Child Nutrition Act is set to expire this month and the Time for Lunch campaign is gathering signatures for a petition that will urge Congress to amend the new bill to provide healthy food for school children. Nutritious, locally grown lunches would help fight childhood obesity and provide jobs for local economies.

To help spread awareness about their goals, the Time for Lunch campaign is also organizing a National Eat-In. Each community Eat-In will be a potluck with a purpose, meant to bring people together over a (preferably healthy and eco-friendly!) meal and spread the word about the need for action on behalf of our nation’s children.

There are currently almost 300 Eat-Ins already planned for Labor Day, but if there isn’t one in your hometown, you can check out these helpful tips about how to host your own. If you were already planning to get together with friends and family to celebrate, organizing an Eat-In might just be what you need to make this Labor Day’s gathering memorable. The Organizer Toolkit has some great suggestions for how to tell your community about what you’re doing and get you geared up to make a difference. Choose a theme and make it a party! Who says you can’t do good by crackin’ open a brewski and snacking on fruit kabobs with your neighbors? Sounds like my kind of philanthropy.

Be sure to take pictures of your Eat-In and post them on your blog; it’s your stories that will find eager ears and provide the chance to tell others about the importance of getting real food into our nation’s schools. Now go have fun and don’t forget to sign the petition and pass it along to your friends and family!
