Aptera, Three-Wheeled Electric Car, Only Moderately Resembles Spaceship

The turn of the decade is bringing about some exciting new players in the personal transportation scene, and at least one is stripping down old presumptions about cars – like that they have four wheels and don’t look like spaceships.

The Aptera 2e, a slick new energy-efficient two-seater promised for late 2009, emphasizes aerodynamics and runs on battery power. Also, its fourth wheel is the spare tire.

Using a three-point, wide-stance design, the low-drag 2e will carry drivers and passengers across 100 miles of highway before requiring a charge, which will take 8 hours on a standard 110 volt outlet. According to Aptera’s website, most cars waste 50% of their energy deflecting wind. The 2e’s sleek curves cut through the air like a Nerf football so the motor doesn’t have to work as hard and the battery lasts longer. Still, not everyone can cut it on 100 miles a day, so a gas/electric hybrid version is also in the works.

Owners will make no compromises on creature comforts, either. The 2e has solar panels embedded in its roof to help power a climate control system that keeps the cabin at the perfect temperature while the car sits in the blazing sun or freezing cold. Push the ‘Start’ button and Smart Phone connectivity will please technophiles, while an optional DVD navigation system will minimize waste of precious battery juice. For the frantic errand runner, the cargo area can hold 15 grocery bags or a bunch of soccer gear.

Regarding safety, the dual airbags, front and rear crumple zones, and side-impact door beams put the 2e on par with other cars in its class. However, as noted on Aptera’s website, the 2e’s stable stance means better handling and accident avoidance.

Industrywide, Aptera will have some tough competition. The 100-mile-range Nissan Leaf, which seats five and is priced competitively with the 2e, will hit dealerships in 2010. The highly-anticipated Chevy Volt, which can go 40 miles on battery power alone, but can also do long road trips by recharging with an onboard gas generator, is also expected in 2010 (albeit with a steeper price tag). The four-door Tesla S will seat seven and rack up to 300 miles on a charge; it takes to the streets in 2011.

Competition breeds excellence, right? Auto makers have tried and failed to launch commercially successful electric vehicle programs before, but with widespread awareness of global climate change and increasing frustration with Middle-Eastern oil dependence, along with serious advancements in range and features, the next decade is sure to host the zero-emissions transportation boom.
