Today is the eighth anniversary of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan. Each year, we’ve looked back on this as a tragic moment in U.S. history and as a sobering reminder that the world’s conflicts could be brought to our front door. September 11 was also, however, a day that fully exemplified the American spirit of brotherhood, bravery and service, as thousands of people from New York and around the country came forward to lend their support.

It is in this spirit that President Obama announced the United We Serve campaign and September 11 as a National Day of Service. Causecast is proud to be a part of this effort and encourages all of you to visit 911DayOfService.org to post your personal good deeds or learn how you can volunteer as part of this national effort. Despite what some televised talking heads will tell you, this is not a political initiative, but an opportunity to achieve the same togetherness we all felt after 9/11, that our communities are not about fighting but helping each other. For a response to charges that the National Day of Service cheapens the meaning of 9/11, read a response from MyGoodDeed founder David Paine on The Huffington Post.

We want to help you give back, however that may be. Whether it’s organizing a community potluck, supporting local veterans, or planning a bike to work day, we can all make September 11 a day that commemorates the unyielding dedication and spirit of generosity that is a hallmark of American character.

Also, be sure to read our exclusive interview with Edward Skyler, Deputy Mayor for Operations of New York City. He discusses his experiences on 9/11, his goal to provide quality health care for all recovery workers, and the importance of public service in American communities.
