UN Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina Jolie, visited the world’s largest refugee camp last weekend. The camp is in Dadaab, a region on the border of Kenya and Somalia, which is said to be on the verge of a “humanitarian catastrophe.” The camp was built to accommodate 90,000 people, but now holds over 285,000.

On her visit, Jolie witnessed the desperate conditions that hundreds of thousands are forced to live in. With water only being provided every other day, overcrowded shelters and no space for a trash dump, the onrush of diseases such as Malaria are posing a major threat to the community.

In the video created from Jolie’s visit, she says: “The Somali families I met today are full of warmth and affection. I wish more people could meet them, and then they would have a stronger desire to help.”

For more information on the conflict in Somalia, read the 2009 report provided by Amnesty International. To make a contribution to the humanitarian efforts, check out CARE’s work in Dadaab refugee camps providing food, water, education and other resources. CARE has been active in Dadaab since 1991, but recently they are struggling to provide for the enormous influx of refugees.
