Monks Protest For Burma At G20 Summit

As Pittsburgh welcomes world leaders for the G20 Summit today, protesters gather to raise awareness about important global and domestic issues. Among them, a group of Buddhist monks has gathered to commemorate the Saffron Revolution that took place two years ago. The monks proudly carried Shepard Fairey’s image of imprisoned democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from Causecast’s Freedom to Lead campaign.

About 15 monks from the International Burmese Monks Organization wore saffron and crimson robes and chanted through a bullhorn in a late morning march through downtown. The group was commemorating the second anniversary of the 2007 Saffron Revolution in Burma.
The monks carried Buddhist flags, stopped briefly to meditate at one point, and were followed by about 40 or 50 supporters, some carrying signs of the Democracy leader in Burma that said ‘’Freedom to lead.’’ Some in the crowd said they had come from Kentucky, Maryland and as far as California for the march, which was ending at Point State Park.
