As a result of our globalized economy and the demand for cheap goods, pretty much everything you buy these days was made by the hands of an underpaid laborer in a sweatshop, either in the U.S. or abroad. You can’t even be sure that the backpack you’re toting to school is sweatshop-free.

This Novemeber, Causecast featured organization, Invisible Children, is launching a new campaign called MEND to address the issues of our impersonal economy and provide jobs for women in Northern Uganda. MEND helps rehabilitate former child soldiers by giving them jobs as seamstresses and helping them save up to start their own businesses. The organization also provides mentoring services to help women recover from the traumatic experiences of war.

When you buy a MEND messenger bag, available November 2, you can proudly carry a sweatshop-free bag that is helping Ugandan women rebuild their lives. Each bag will have the name of the seamstress who made it sewn inside – you can go online and learn all about her! Invisible Children is taking the distance out of the global economy!
