Yes Men Target Coca-Cola Company Over Bottled Water

by CLAIRE GRINTON, Contributing Writer
The Yes Men have been creating humorous, over the top pranks together for the past ten years. Their unique brand of alternative activism has garnered a lot of attention, and their latest campaign is no exception. This time, Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno took on corporate giant Coca-Cola over their labeling on Dasani bottled water, in hopes to encourage Coca-Cola to cite their water source on the label. And just what is that water source? Tap water. They took to the streets, posing as Coke representatives, with a mock campaign for Deception, the new brand name and labeling for their bottled water.
They paired up with Corporate Accountability International’s Think Outside the Bottle Campaign, an initiative advocating to protect our nation’s public water systems. Instead of relying on costly and wasteful bottled water, they believe everyone has the right to safe and clean drinking water – from their tap. And why ruin our environment with plastic bottles – when the bottled water companies are just selling us what comes out of our taps anyway?
The video of the whole prank going down:
The Yes Men aren’t the only ones with Coca-Cola on their mind. Eco-conscious design studio Ryan Harc recently proposed a new can design for Coke – one without any paint. By skipping the step of painting the aluminum, they would save a huge amount of resources on the almost 25 billion cans produced each year, as well as cut back on air and water pollution created during manufacture. Without paint, they also don’t need paint removal products, which in turn also speeds up the recycling process by eliminating a step.
If you want to get in activist mode and pull some stunts worthy of the Yes Men, check out their Fix the World Challenge, and keep up to date on their latest missions through Facebook or Twitter. You can also join Corporate Accountability International’s Online Activist Network and start directly challenging irresponsible corporations. Don’t forget what the Yes Men showed us – Dasani is just tap water, plus the plastic that will never decompose and never go away.

This is fantastic! I've been concerned about the privatization of our water since I watched the movie Flow.
Kudo's to the Yes Men and Corporate Accountability International for taking on the water privateers like Coke.
It is ridiculous that Coke is taking a public good putting it in a bottle and selling it back to us at thousands of times the cost. Their marketing has undermined support in public water systems and convinced us that bottled water is safer.
Keep up the good work Corporate Accountability International.
This is rubbish. The Dasani bottle clearly says "filtered water" not "spring water". Most people don't know that it's "tap water" because they don't care to find out. If you buy a Dasani product, you are buying it because you want to drink water. If I'm at a train station in NYC I'd rather buy a bottle of Dasani than to drink from a faucet in the bathroom.
