As part of President Obama’s United We Serve campaign, the White House has launched a new initiative targeted at addressing national hunger. Running from Thanksgiving Day 2009 to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18, the United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor initiative will raise awareness about hunger in America and provide tools for people to get involved on the local level this winter.

In 2008, over 49 million Americans lacked “food security,” meaning they didn’t have reliable access to adequate food. With the recession hitting the nation hard over the past year, national poverty and unemployment have skyrocketed, leaving even more families hungry.

President Obama has committed to reverse the trend of increasing numbers of hungry Americans. Additionally, the President has pledged to end childhood hunger by 2015. In order for the President to achieve these ambitious goals, he needs the nation to rally behind him – across partisan lines – to engage the spirit of service and reach out to “feed a neighbor.”

How you can get involved with Feed a Neighbor:

• Download the Anti-Hunger Volunteer Toolkit from the United We Serve website. The toolkit is a detailed road map that covers all topics related to hunger, including information on how to help feed senior citizens, provide for school children, support local food banks and more.

• Use the United We Serve site to find volunteer opportunities in your community.

Feeding America is an organization that, like the name implies, is also working to eradicate national hunger. You can help feeding America by making a donation, urging Congress to pass the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act and more.
