The City of Angels and billionaire Ed Roski, plan to spread their eco-friendly wings and end the 16 year long lull for Los Angeles football fans. An $800 million stadium, 15 miles south of Los Angeles, is in the works. Roski thinks the location is key (even though he already owned the land) because it’s freeway accessible to Orange County, Riverside County, Los Angeles, and San Bernandino County.

Aedas architects designed the eco-friendly stadium to be the first NFL stadium LEED certified. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, gives certificates to buildings that implement green technology and environmentally sustainable practices.

The stadium, which could be completed as early as next year, will be home to more than just football fans. Roski describes it as, “a major entertainment complex,” that will house shops, office space, restaurants, a live theater and cinema.

Aedas plans to build the massive complex using the surrounding area’s hillside as support for 60 percent of the building. Steel use will be reduced as well as cost. Other green measures include; major recycling efforts, areas to collect storm water, and reduced CO2 emissions from the building.

In a city like L.A., where smog and pollution are rampant, an eco-conscious stadium sounds like a big step forward. California is often a forefront in innovation, and L.A.’s new stadium will hopefully inspire other cities to green their sports complexes and more.
