  • Add Prevention to the War on Cancer

Sens. Ted Kennedy and Kay Bailey Hutchison will soon launch a renewed—and much overdue—War on Cancer. It's the first effort of this magnitude since the Nixon Administration, a bill that aims to address the continuum of cancer care from detection to hospice, including provisions addressing screening, detection, treatment, access to care and survivor issues. None of these areas is anything short of critical to facing our cancer epidemic.

But to be truly comprehensive the War on Cancer must also include research into environmental contributors to cancer and strategies to prevent the disease. Polls show that Americans are concerned about the impact of the environment on their health—and a growing body of scientific evidence supports that concern. We owe it to the people who are living and dying with cancer to expand our efforts to reduce or eliminate every possible preventable cause of this devastating disease. With leadership from these Senators, we can protect more men, women and children from ever receiving a cancer diagnosis.
