Organization Description

For more than 30 years, Free Arts for Abused Children has successfully delivered meaningful programs that integrate the healing power of the arts into the lives of children who have been abused, are homeless, or are at-risk of falling through the cracks in the system, as well as their families in need.  Free Arts inspires hope in the lives of these children through innovative arts programs and positive interactions with caring adult volunteers.  In 2008, 27,598 children throughout Los Angeles and Orange County benefited from our arts programs.

Through the healing power of art, creative self-expression is nurtured, generational cycles of violence are interrupted, and children and teens see the possibility of better futures for themselves.  We know that artistic expression builds self-confidence and self-esteem and that is why the philosophy behind all Free Arts programs is simply that “Art Heals!”

Free Arts for Abused Children recruits, screens, trains, places, and supports community volunteers to lead creative arts programs at more than 40 independent partner agencies throughout Los Angeles and Orange County.  These agencies include foster family agencies, transitional housing facilities, community resource centers and more.

All of our programs are led by volunteer artists, musicians, actors and writers, as well as community members who simply identify themselves as child advocates who love spending creative time with kids.  These volunteers form a unique community of adults who are finding new meaning and purpose in their lives as they understand firsthand the issues that impact abused, homeless and at-risk children.
