Organization Description
Since 1990 Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has built and renovated over 600 homes locally and worldwide. HFH GLA partners with hard-working families who currently live in substandard living conditions; earn 60% or lower than the annual median income; qualify to pay back a zero-interest loan and agree to give 500 hours of “sweat equity” building their home and their neighbors’ homes. HFH GLA helps partner families purchase homes and also trains them on how to help build and maintain their homes as well as operate a Home Owners Association.
HFH GLA strives to build affordable, energy efficient, healthy and safe homes that are close to transit. Homes are equipped with solar energy generation systems; tankless water heaters; water retention systems; native/low water use plants; low flow toilets; water saver faucets/showers; efficient irrigation design; efficient lighting; recycled wall and ceiling insulation; green recycled carpet and pad; cementatious fiberboard siding and insulated glass windows. HFH GLA was awarded Silver LEED Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for 30 new homes built in 2007 and the organization recently began construction on 10 additional homes, which are also expected to achieve LEED Certification.
HFH GLA supports reuse of building materials with its Home Improvement Store located in Gardena, California. The Home Improvement Store resells new and used items to the general public, donated by local businesses and residents, at well below retail pricing. All proceeds help HFH GLA build more affordable homes and the benefits to the community include waste diversion from local landfills and significant savings on home items.
Habitat homes are built through the love and support of volunteers, neighbors, city and government supporters, sponsors, donors and homeowner families. The short-term effects include beautification of neighborhoods in greater L.A. and improved quality of life for hard-working families. The long-term effects will include energy savings for the homeowners, regenerated energy for the surrounding community, pride in the neighborhood, and many more wonderful stories to come of how Habitat for Humanity builds hope, lives and communities.
Habitat for Humanity supporters enjoy the tangible rewards of giving by building alongside homeowner families and witnessing their donations transform into homes filled with love and a lifetime of memories to come. Volunteer opportunities include building with Habitat, working in the Home Improvement Store; administrative support in the home office and committee support. Donations of all sizes make a big difference, in fact, just $5.00 will buy a box of much needed nails.
