LA's BEST Activities Each day after school LA's BEST provides its students with homework assistance, a cognitively based enrichment activity (i.e. science club, math club, literacy activity), a fun recreation activity of their choosing (i.e., dance, sports, art, cooking), and a nutritious snack.

In addition to daily core activities, LA's BEST has several enhanced programs available to students including:

ASAP includes visual art, music, dance, drama and poetry classes, and features artists/educators—in—residence working with the LA's BEST children. Each 10—week residency concludes with a special culmination event which brings together students, families and community members to celebrate the talent and accomplishments of the children.

BEST Fit provides fun and innovative opportunities for LA's BEST children and their families to increase their physical activity, encourages healthy habits including drinking more water and making healthy eating choices, and teaches kids and parents to understand and monitor food labels.
    Celebrate Science Program

The LA's BEST Celebrate Science Program provides opportunities for LA's BEST children to have fun, engaging and interactive science experiences under a "team inquiry" model — developed under the guidance of NASA / Jet Propulsion Laboratory — which closely mirrors the real world in which scientists work and provides children with a true collaborative experience. This program culminates with the Citywide Celebrate Science Fair where winning teams are awarded all—expense—paid trips to a parent—child weekend at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, AL.
    KidType

KidType is a five-week program that teaches fourth- and fifth-grade students the basics of touch-typing through fun and interactive games and lessons. The program concludes with a ceremony at which students receive a free, used computer to take home and share with their families.

KidzLit, a research—based literacy program developed specifically for use in after school programs by the Developmental Studies Center (Oakland, CA), helps LA's BEST foster a love of reading in its students by centering a range of activities on a collection of 120 books and companion guides carefully selected because children come alive when they read or hear them read aloud.

From educational trips to performing arts and music events, from community celebrations to recreational outings, LA's BEST students are provided with countless opportunities to explore their communities and beyond which helps to broaden their realm of experiences within and outside of their own cultures.
