Om Records had just "adopted" one of the houses at the NextAid Youth With A Vision Community Center and Children's Village in Dennilton, South Africa. This means they are making a commitment to utilize their networks to raise all the funds to build them! Om Records has been a long time partner of NextAid since the release of the ReBOOT compilation in 2005. Help OM, help us! Fans can make a donation here (http://filez.om-records.com/ecard/nextaid/houseofom.html)
The House of Om will be a safe, comfortable, loving four-bedroom home for 6 children who have lost their parents to AIDS, and an adult caretaker. The house will be built using natural building methods. Examples of sustainable techniques used in the construction of the Dennilton village are hybrid systems of compressed-earth blocks and earthbags and metal roofs with water catchment gutters and cisterns.
Founded in 1995 as a response to the cross-pollination of the funky underground music scene in San Francisco, Om Recor...Read More -

February and March were busy months on the site of our Children's Village and Community Center in Dennilton, South Africa! NextAid is fortunate to be working with water expert, Dan Tormey of the Los Angeles firm, ENTRIX (pictured on left). Dan has proved to be a wealth of knowledge and expertise in areas of hydrology, geology, and alternative energy. He is generously donating his time to consult with us in designing our water infrastructure plan for the site. Dan spent 10 days in South Africa in late February surveying the site, meeting with borehole drillers, plumbers and the agricultural department. Recently returned to LA, Dan is working up a plan to solve our water needs for the center and we hope to start implementing his recommendations in the coming months. Dan is being assisted on the ground by a new member of NextAid's team, Matt Styslinger. Matt is about to get his Master's in Sustainable Development from SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont and is spending some time in South...Read More

Stories from the Field: Volunteer Student Groups

January was a busy month for hosting volunteers at the site of our children's village and community center in Dennilton. Thirty five students from Santa Monica City College spent two days of service with us as part of a month long study tour in communications and psychology. The college students were a tremendous help in painting, landscaping, and preparing a new garden space for planting. They were treated to some locally cooked lunches and performances by the youth. The following week Youth With A Vision received a visit from eight University of Wisconsin students who spent the day interviewing and conversing with YWAV members, youth and staff to get a better understanding of local culture and the context of HIV/AIDS programs. We welcome these volunteer groups from afar and see the cross-cultural engagement as a valuable program and enriching experience for all participants.
This month's student journal entry is written by Geneva Marshall:
