Organization Description

Project Angel Food knows the impact that proper nutrition has on the health, and survival, of people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Weight gain, efficacy of medications, medications being administered on schedule, and improved emotional state are some of the key benefits. While Project Angel Food nourishes, physically and emotionally, some people during their final days on earth, so they do not die hungry and alone, we are nevertheless an agency about the living.

Our vision is to be of direct, effective service to people in Los Angeles County so overwhelmed by illness that they cannot cook for themselves or their families by providing key nutritional support designed to meet each person’s heightened medical and physical needs.

Since its inception in 1989, Project Angel Food has been fighting a common problem – hunger, isolation and malnutrition among people living with serious illnesses. Our mission is to nourish the body and spirit of men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Ours ongoing program serves all of Los Angeles County and delivers free, nutritionally-balanced meals directly to the clients’ homes six days week. In nineteen years of service over 5 millions meals have been delivered to more than 12,000 people in need. Without this daily meal service, clients risk malnutrition and deteriorating health since they are unable to provide their own meals due to diminished energy and limited income.

Project Angel Food has always adapted to the ever changing needs of the community it serves. People living with a serious illness need better nutrition in order to fight disease, but their diets must also be carefully balanced to prevent secondary diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, and/or diabetes. In 1995 nutritional counseling services were added to ensure clients were educated about how diet and nutrition affect overall health. Some clients require highly specialized meals to accommodate a particular illness which is determined in their initial assessment.

In 2004, after fourteen years as an AIDS service organization,we saw the need to expand our services to reach more of those in need. The mission was expanded to serve all those debilitated by a life-threatening illness.

Project Angel Food employs highly skilled program staff to ensure clients receive the highest quality service. Two registered dieticians are on staff to plan meals specifically for clients living with serious illness. Meals are also planned to be appetizing and delicious, which is critical for those clients whose disease or its treatment suppresses their appetite. All meals are prepared in our onsite kitchen by professionally trained chefs with the help of dozens of dedicated volunteers everyday.

As we now serve all people disabled by any life-threatening illness, our client population now reflects the diversity of Los Angeles County: 65% of our clients are people of color; they are gay and straight; range in age from 14 to 99 years old; we serve more women than anytime in our 19 years.

Several milestones were reached during 2007 – our greatest year of ongoing service to date. We served 491,003 meals to 2,117 unduplicated individuals and on November 15, 2007 delivered our 5th millionth meal, an event highlighted by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa delivering the momentous meal personally. Also, in 2007, thanks in great part to The Annenberg Foundation, The Avon Breast Cancer Foundation, The Keck Foundation and the MAC AIDS Fund, we moved our headquarters from a rented space at 7475 Sunset Boulevard to our first permanent home at 922 Vine Street with expanded kitchen and dispatch facilities. This move was in direct response to an ever increasing demand for services which our former facility on Sunset Boulevard was no longer able to meet.

Karen, a breast cancer client, called to say she has never been more grateful than to have found Project Angel Food. “I was a professional for 20 years and within 1 week I went from a normal life to nothing. Breast cancer was the club I never asked to join. The people at Project Angel Food are compassionate, giving, and knowledgeable bout my case. Thank you…I didn’t have enough strength to purchase food or cook meals. Thank you….thank you…thank you.”
