Organization Description

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) was founded in 1877 and is the first organization to promote animal welfare in Southern California. Originally chartered to end the abuse of horses used in travel during the “buggy” days, the organization expanded to include child abuse cases and then pet abuse cases.

As a nonprofit, independently chartered organization, spcaLA is not affiliated with any other “SPCA” or humane society. spcaLA does not receive funding to support our humane programs from any government agency. Financial support for the organization’s programs is provided by donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Today, spcaLA is 75,000 supporters strong and is dedicated to the welfare of all animals. To further our mission of preventing violence toward animals through Law Enforcement, Education, Advocacy and Intervention, we offer myriad dynamic programs and services, among them are the following.

ANIMAL PROTECTION SERVICES (APS) – As the Law Enforcement Division of spcaLA,our Humane Officers are committed to investigate animal cruelty cases and prosecute individuals or organizations who neglect or abuse animals anywhere within the state of California.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION – Because cruelty toward animals in children may be a symptom of existing abuse as well as a predictor of future violence toward children, our international Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC) youth workshops encourage young people to be kind, caring and to have respect and compassion for animals and each other. The goal is to deter future violent behavior by having children work with volunteers, staff and animal trainers to learn proper behavior modification by training shelter dogs. TLC is an international program created spcaLA.

SPECIALTY SPAY/NEUTER CENTER – With the capability of performing 50 surgeries per year, 5 days a week, the Center is set to address the pet overpopulation crisis at its source. Our expert veterinarians focus solely on spay/neuter surgeries, allowing for safer procedures and innovation in pain management and prevention. spcaLA provides spay/neuter services for cats, dogs and rabbits at affordable rates with financial assistance available for those who qualify.

HUMANE EDUCATION – Through these efforts, we teach children and adults the proper care and respect of animals through visits to schools, libraries, clubs and the like in addition to operating shelter tours and the spcaLA Friends for Life Summer Camp for children ages 8 to 13.

ANIMAL SAFETY NET – Victims of domestic violence often refuse to leave home because they cannot take their companion animal to the domestic violence shelter. spcaLA provides temporary housing for their animals at no cost allowing the victims to leave the batterers and regain control of their lives.

DISASTER ANIMAL RESPONSE TEAM (DART) – DART is a mobile command post which contains a full communications system that is capable of monitoring and dispatching emergency services during disasters to provide temporary shelter for animals and front-line veterinary care. DART works with local, state, and national agencies to help families and their animals with medical, food and housing assistance.

COMPANION ANIMAL SERVICES (CAS) – CAS provides shelter and medical attention to homeless and abused animals, returns lost pets to their owners and finds new and caring homes. To combat the pet overpopulation crisis, spcaLA requires all cats, dogs and rabbits be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

ANIMAL TRAINING & BEHAVIOR – To encourage the human-animal bond and increase adoptions, spcaLA socializes and exercises shelter animals, in addition to providing enrichment activities. With dog-training classes and a free behavior helpline for the public, spcaLA provides post-adoption support to keep pets with their families.

spcaLA MARKETPLACES – spcaLA Marketplaces, often located inside Pet Adoption Centers (PACs), are self-sustaining, storefront approaches that offer a wide variety of pet food and supplies as well as hosting pet adoptions. spcaLA also offers an online marketplace at www.spcaLA.com.

VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers share kindness with elderly and infirmed people through the Animal Assisted Therapy program. This program includes visits to homes for children, veterans and facilities for AIDS patients. In addition to providing thousands of hours of service at various spcaLA locations, volunteers provide Foster Care for animals not ready for adoption, either because they are too young or are in need of special attention due to being abused.
