Organization Description

Stoked Mentoring is a unique non-profit organization that develops innovative mentoring programs exposing “at risk” youth and their mentors to action sports as a means to develop and foster resiliency, determination and success. Through hands-on partnerships with social service agencies, Stoked presents and oversees several programs yearly, including Snow Mentor, Skate Mentor and Surf Mentor. Responsible for developing the curriculum for each mentoring program/ season, Stoked will recruit and train program mentors and teachers/coaches, hand-match mentor and mentee, manage the mentoring relationship for optimal results and oversee follow up post-season. The current programs are targeted towards teens 13 – 18 years old.

Founder Steve Larosiliere, along with Co-founder, Sal Masekela believed that the courage and perseverance needed to learn action sports would be an ideal way to teach those life skills to at –risk and disadvantaged youth. Combining life lessons with the power of mentoring and a supportive community, Stoked Mentoring was born. Through Stoked, teens gain a supportive, encouraging mentor along with a team of people determined to see them succeed.

By introducing mentoring pairs to action sports, the very things many of us were warned against are now creating a positive environment and a foundation for teens. And one teen at a time, counterculture WILL change the world.

I am a yoga instructor here in Los Angeles and would love to bring yoga to the youth population in this area. Can you guide me in the direction to make this happen. I think this practice, while not an action sport, is really beneficial for all and can really help at-risk youth to keep a healthy, positive mindset. Thanks!

I can relate to at risk kids, from being one and overcoming the language that keeps kids down.
