Organization Description

5 Saves Lives

- Youth Mentoring Connection has served over 2,500 teens over the past 8 years, with an unprecedented 95% high school graduation rate when their home schools are graduating at a rate of 39%.

- But diminishing funds and exploding demand has led to a waiting list of several hundred students who want to enter the program.

- We need your help.

- We have created a virtual fund drive with the goal of raising $120,000 to put 100 more students through the program.

- No amount is too small.

- $5 pays for one day of mentoring for a teen and you never know which day will save their life.

- $100 provides a child with 3 weeks of mentoring, and $1,200 enables us to match a child with a professional mentor for a full program year (9 months)!

- Become a supporter and donor of ours on CauseCast and e-mail 5 friends and ask them to help us spread the word. 5 Saves Lives.

L.A. youth need our help. For a young person living in South Central Los Angeles, going to school can mean risking your life.

The few resources that exist are being directed to the younger kids who are easier to work with, leaving teens with real problems to fend for themselves against a street culture that is all too willing to recruit them into gang activity or victimize them because they have no place to go to be safe.

But despite the growing problem, tough economic times have meant a diminishing supply of much-needed resources that keep these kids off the streets and in school.

That’s where the Youth Mentoring Connection comes in. The Youth Mentoring Connection has been successfully helping kids deal with these issues by matching them with caring adult guides called “mentors”. Mentors help young people who would otherwise have no chance to get out of gangs, deal with life’s issues, graduate high school or go on to college.

In operation for over 8 years, YMC is one of the most successful programs of its kind. With almost 3000 mentor/mentee matches to date, YMC has an unprecedented 92% completion rate in the year-long mentorship program. And of those kids, 96% have graduated high school, giving them the skills and support needed for higher education and good jobs.

But as YMC founder Tony LoRe says, “It’s still not enough. These kids need a place to go every day to be safe; to do their homework; to engage in healthy social relationships and activities and to find themselves – a place that will welcome them regardless of their past mistakes or current situation. Our dream is of an Urban Oasis, not just a teen center, but a teen community where young people can get all of their needs met…and we’re going to make it happen. There is a groundswell of people signing up to help us transform this dream into reality.”

The Youth Mentoring Connection runs many innovative and acclaimed programs including a ‘virtual teen center’ which houses activities and programs for the mentors and their kids. In the past few years they have added gender specific discussion groups — “ECHO”; Psychological Counseling; physical activities like surfing, snowboarding, ice skating; an Urban Film Academy; drumming; Rites of Passage Retreats; Poetry and Spoken Word workshops; and more.

With the success of YMC and the growing pressures on the youth of central Los Angeles, demand is exploding for the program. There are currently several hundred young men and women who need our services. They need a chance at the support that YMC mentors can provide. And YMC does not want to turn them away.

Youth Mentoring Connection needs your help. You can apply to become a volunteer mentor, and you can contribute badly needed funds to help expand YMC’s vision of an “Urban Oasis” for the youth of Los Angeles.

No amount is too small! Just $5 can save a kids’ life. $5 puts a child through the program for one day. $150 provides a child with 3 weeks of mentorship, and $1300 enables us to match a child with a professional mentor for the full year-long program.

Help YMC put these great kids on the road to a bright and successful life!

L.A. kids thank you!

Sincerely,
Tony LoRe
