Sports Illustrated Picture Editor Jimmy Colton Talks About the Importance of Do 1 Thing
Sports Illustrated Picture Editor Jimmy Colton shares his thoughts on the power of photographer and our responsiblity to give back. James Colton is currently the photography editor for Sports Illustrated. He began his career in 1972 as the color picture editor for the Associated Press. Five years later he joined Newsweek as a senior photo editor for international news. In 1988, he became executive vice-president and general manager of Sipa Press in New York, before returning to Newsweek in 1992 as the director of photography. He is on the board of directors of the Eddie Adams Workshop, and is a mentor for J Camp, a national program that recruits talented high school students of color, sponsored by the Asian American Journalists Association. He was presented with the “Golden Career Award” at FotoFusion 2004 by the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, received an International Photography Awards “Lucie” for Picture Editor of the Year in 2007, was named Magazine Picture Editor of the Year in 2008 by the National Press Photographers Association, and was been acknowledged as one of the 100 most important people in photography by American Photo. http://do1thing.org

Ken and Melanie Light visit the YEAH, a youth homeless shelter in Berkeley, CA, as part of Do1Thing. Ken Light: Ken is a social documentary photographer whose work has appeared in books, magazines and exhibitions. Light has spent much of his 35 year long photographic career working in a black-and-white documentary mode, with the hope that photographic evidence will make a political difference. He has worked with many NGO's who have used his images to tell the story of the communities he has documented in brochures, posters and on-line, trying to impact social conditions. His work has been focused on America. As well his work has been published in book form by Aperture, The Smithsonian Institution and University of California Press. His seven books include Coal Hollow, Delta Time, Texas Death Row, To The Promised Land, With These Hands and the text Witness In Our Time. His new work was exhibited last year in a one-person show at the International Center for Photography. He is represented by the Barry Singer Gallery. Melanie Light is an author and multi-media dabbler. She is a co-author of “Coal Hollow” and the founding executive director of Fotovision, a nonprofit that provides community and education for documentary photographers. She has written about documentary photographers in catalogs for exhibitions at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, SF Camerawork and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, among others.
